Other Assessments

Through Baylor TIP, families may register for additional testing for their students. Testing will be administered in-person at the Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development in Waco, Texas, and will be scheduled with our office after registration is completed. Students do not need to be formally identified as gifted or as Baylor TIP Scholars in order to be tested. We currently offer the following three tests:

Test of Nonverbal Intelligence – Fourth Edition (TONI-4)
The TONI-4 is an individually administered, norm-referenced instrument that uses abstract reasoning and figural problem-solving to estimate general intellectual ability. The original TONI (First Edition) was published in 1982. Now in its fourth edition, this instrument has been used to estimate the intellectual ability of thousands of individuals from children to adults. Upon completing the TONI-4 assessment, parents will receive an index score of general intellectual ability, a percentile rank comparing the student’s performance with other students of similar age, and a general interpretation of the student's performance. The TONI-4 has been validated for use with individuals aged 6 through 89.

Screening Assessment for Gifted Elementary and Middle School Students – Third Edition (SAGES-3)
The SAGES-3 is a norm-referenced test used to identify students who are gifted and/or talented in intellectual and academic abilities.  The SAGES-3 has four subtests: (a) nonverbal reasoning, (b) language arts/social studies, (c) verbal reasoning, and (d) mathematics/science. Upon completing the SAGES-3, parents will receive three composite scores in the areas of (a) reasoning ability, (b) academic ability, and (c) general ability. For each of those composite scores, parents will receive a percentile rank comparing the students’ performance to other students of similar age and an interpretation of the probability of giftedness. The SAGES-3 has been validated for use with individuals aged 5 through 14.

Test of Mathematical Abilities for Gifted Students – Second Edition (TOMAGS-2)
The TOMAGS-2 was designed to measure mathematical abilities of students in grades 1-6. The TOMAGS-2 requires students to work through a series of problems that are aligned to national mathematics standards. The test examines the students’ flexibility in using mathematical reasoning and applying already learned mathematical knowledge to new situations. Some of the test problems on the TOMAGS-2 use concepts taught formally in school, while others call for use of knowledge that is not taught formally in school. The TOMAGS-2 has been validated for use with students in grades 1 – 6.
